What does peace
mean to you?

That's the question that 300 Michigan middle school students are asking themselves as part of a yearlong service-learning project— The Peace Project— a partnership between the Pioneer School District and the Plymouth Arts Council.

Students from Pioneer Middle School in Plymouth, Michigan in collaboration with Todd Parr, author of THE PEACE BOOK, traveled to New York City on April 3, 2009 to promote peace. As a “random act of peace,” students read and passed out copies of THE PEACE BOOK to people on the streets of Manhattan (Fifth Avenue, Central Park and Grand Central Terminal).

In addition to THE PEACE BOOK, people also received a peace "gift bag" that contained promotional material from the following individuals and organizations: Yoko Ono, Little Brown Books for Young Readers, Junior Tours, Share our Strength, Shelterbox, UNICEF, One, American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, American Association of Teachers of French, Pennies for Peace, Share our Strength, American Library Association, Oxfam, Project Vote Smart, Putumayo World Music, Soles 4 Souls, Peace One Day and Amnesty International.
This year’s project began with a celebration of International Peace Day. Pioneer invited Todd to come and share The Peace Book with their community on September 23, 2008. During his visit, Todd spoke at Pioneer Middle School, Farrand Elementary School, and at an evening presentation and book signing at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Northville, MI.

During that same week, eighth graders traveled to every elementary school in their district and read The Peace Book to the second graders. The students continue their collaboration by creating their own Peace Book. Second graders are empowered to use their imaginations to define the concept of peace. The project helps students focus on the elements of community, exploring cultural and historic notions of identity, strengthening writing skills and expressing thoughts and feelings through the visual arts.
